GEMSTONES

 

Gemstones was a project initially created for Ludum Dare 51. Ludum Dare is a Game Jam within 2 days, where all assets must be created within this time frame. This led to the creation of my own spin on the classic match genre, and I developed it further over the course of 4 days to publish the game onto Steam.

The game was successfully published onto Steam, utilizing Steam's API to add achievements into the game.

I decided to try a new art style. This allowed me to expand my skills within the art asset creation space, going for a hand-painted water color look.

Credits

All art was done by me within Adobe Photoshop. I set out to create a strong visual style, utilizing a painted water-colored look to give the game an inviting feel.

All programming was done by me within the game engine Construct 3.

All audio was created by me within FL Studio. The game took place within a mineshaft, so the audio helped to reflect this through the use of reverb to give the game an underground atmosphere.

I used FL Studio to create the music for the game. The game was a relaxing game, so the music helped to reflect this with a slow melodic pace. The instruments were soft to help play into this relaxing nature.

In-Game Music Track

To create the achievements, I started by honing into a style that will work across the achievements. I then expanded this to create a consistent assortment of icons using Adobe Illustrator.

Since the game was made over the course of 4 days, the project came together quite quickly. This allowed me to execute on a vision as soon as the idea sparked into my head, instead of waiting.

extra insight

I pulled audio inspiration from Candy Crush, creating "feel-good" audio when the player did something good in game.
